Virginia Community Health Worker Association

This interactive workshop is designed for middle school (grades 6–8) and high school (grades 9–12) students to raise awareness about the risks of fentanyl and nicotine products, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes. Using evidence-informed lessons developed by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY) with support from researchers at Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, and East Tennessee State University, students will learn how these substances can affect their health and safety.

The workshop provides age-appropriate, engaging activities that align with Virginia’s Standards of Learning, helping students make informed decisions. Fentanyl prevention lessons were launched for high school students in 2024, adapted for middle school in 2025, and are now available in Spanish for both age groups as of 2026.

By participating, students will gain practical knowledge to recognize the dangers of these substances, build skills to resist peer pressure, and make healthier choices for themselves and their communities.

Este taller interactivo está diseñado para estudiantes de secundaria (grados 6–8) y preparatoria (grados 9–12) para concienciarlos sobre los riesgos del fentanilo y los productos que contienen nicotina, incluidos los cigarrillos y los cigarrillos electrónicos (e-cigarettes). Usando lecciones basadas en evidencia desarrolladas por la Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY) con el apoyo de investigadores de Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University y East Tennessee State University, los estudiantes aprenderán cómo estas sustancias pueden afectar su salud y seguridad.

El taller ofrece actividades apropiadas para cada edad que se alinean con los Estándares de Aprendizaje de Virginia, ayudando a los estudiantes a tomar decisiones informadas. Las lecciones de prevención sobre fentanilo se lanzaron para preparatoria en 2024, se adaptaron para secundaria en 2025, y desde 2026 están disponibles en español para ambos niveles.

Al participar, los estudiantes adquirirán conocimientos prácticos para reconocer los peligros de estas sustancias, desarrollar habilidades para resistir la presión de grupo y tomar decisiones más saludables para ellos mismos y sus comunidades.
