Coutts - Drawing and Composition

DRAWING AND COMPOSITION. Instructor: David Coutts

This is an ONGOING CLASS (there is no beginning or ending class; students may join the class at any time) open to students of ALL skill levels and experience.

While taking the Orientation Class is NOT a requirement, NEW STUDENTS with little or no drawing experience are encouraged to take the single ORIENTATION CLASS for DRAWING before registering for regular classes. The Drawing Orientation Class will be offered at various times during the year. Check the club calendar for dates.

Since drawing is fundamental to all visual arts, this class is STRONGLY recommended for students seeking to develop and/or improve their drawing and painting skills.

The class will address the use of the design elements of line, shape, value, color, and texture along with discussions on the design principles of Balance, Proportion, Movement, Repetition, Unity, and Economy. An introduction to various types of drawing mediums and techniques will also be covered. Students will also learn the basic principles of linear and atmospheric perspective and learn how to successfully use them to convey the illusion of depth in their drawings and paintings. Each class consists of a lecture and demonstration by the instructor followed by in-class participation by the students in various studio projects. Students will receive individual guidance as well as a professional critique of their work.
