Designing Engaging Library Facilitation Sessions For Students

Day 1 This interactive training session is designed to support librarians in rethinking and redesigning their instructional approaches for both face-to-face and online environments. Moving beyond content-heavy, one-shot sessions, participants will explore how to create focused, engaging, and learner-centered experiences that promote meaningful student interaction and understanding. The workshop introduces a range of practical assessment and engagement techniques, with a focus on diagnostic and formative approaches applicable across modalities. Through guided design activities and peer observation, participants will create and refine their own facilitation strategies, receiving feedback in a collaborative environment.

Day 2 (half day) This is a focus peer observation and feedback process as a strategy for enhancing teaching and facilitation practice. Participants will explore the key characteristics of effective peer observation, including constructive feedback, reflective dialogue, and professional trust. The session also highlights the benefits of peer observation for continuous improvement and collaborative learning. Through a guided simulation, participants will experience the full observation cycle—preparation, observation, and feedback—equipping them with practical strategies to implement peer observation in their own contexts.

Pre-requisite: Participants must complete the online Peer Observation module before Day 2 of workshop begins. This flipped approach ensures that face-to-face time is dedicated to application, practice, and peer learning. Register and complete https://uwicetl.org/courses/peer-observation-orientation/

By the end of the workshop participants should be able to:

  1. Explain how people learn
  2. Create measurable learning outcomes when planning sessions that align with assessment and teaching and learning activities
  3. Outline a range of assessment and engagement activities
  4. Design a range of assessment activities and engagement strategies that can be used in both the face to face and online learning environments
  5. Use a variety of strategies to engage participants in both face to face and online learning environments
