Class Description

Wonder Works Academy:
In the grammar stage of classical education, art and music appreciation focuses on joyful exposure, memorization, and delight in great works rather than analysis or creation. Children absorb the “grammar” of beauty—building a foundation of facts, names, and impressions that cultivate a lifelong love for truth, goodness, and beauty as reflections of God’s order and creativity.
This joyful, grammar-stage enrichment class immerses young children in the beauty of great art and classical music from a classical Christian perspective—cultivating wonder, appreciation, and a heart attuned to excellence as reflections of God’s creativity and order.
Each week pairs an artistic movement with a corresponding musical composition highlighting key artists and composers:
– Students will explore famous artworks (e.g., The Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt, Starry Night Over the Rhône by Van Gogh, Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer, The Magpie by Monet, Man Playing Santa by Norman Rockwell) through close observation, short backstories, and simple discussions.
– Students will listen to representative compositions, learning the composer’s biography, the piece’s inspiration/story, instruments and their interplay, structure, and expressive elements.
– Hands-on activities will include reviewing art cards and musical samples at home (building a personal “encyclopedia” of masterpieces over the year), memorizing key facts/artists/composers, reciting details, and enjoying fun crafts or interactive musical activities.
This year’s featured art movements include Baroque, Renaissance, Rococo, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Fauvism, Cubism, American Realism, Modern, and more.
Corresponding composers spotlighted are Beethoven, Bach, Massenet, Grieg, Ravel, Brahms, Gershwin, Wagner, Handel, Chopin, Mozart, Debussy, and many others—sampling influential works across centuries.
By repeated listening, thoughtful sharing, and delightful engagement, children develop attentive eyes and ears, recognize timeless beauty, and connect art/music to deeper truths—all in a warm, encouraging co-op setting.
Perfect for primary students eager to delight in the masters!
