Class Description
There are more than 500,000 words in the English language and mastering only 250 of those words enables someone to recognize more than two-thirds of all the words shown in television captions, provided they are the most frequently used. Not only that, but mastery of the top 79 words means being able to read half of all words captioned.
If applied to sign language, which are not English words but rather labels for sign concepts, learning key, frequently used concepts, can enable high levels of communication using ASL.
In this class, both beginners and those who have learned many of the initial signs in ASL 1 can build the on the 5 fundamental building blocks of a sign, which include handshape, movement, location, orientation, and nonmanual markers.
This class will combine a focus on learning (new) conversational signs using American Sign Language, while also allowing advanced signers to take on some new fun and practical practice. And while new vocabulary will be introduced, because they are still fundamental signs, both beginners and advanced students are able to progress.
Beginners will learn new vocabulary alongside more advanced students, as well as be introduced to basics.
Those who have completed ASL 1 will utilize previous signs learned in addition to new vocabulary, with added, fun challenges to communicate more fully in sign as well as advance in their understanding and application of the fundamental building blocks.
After a long summer break, we will begin with reviewing some basic sign concepts and then jump into all the new fundamentals. The vocabulary can be learned at any level but will be applied at different skill levels. Group activities will allow for a variety of skill levels to all enjoy being able to communicate using ASL!
By the end of the year, the goal will be to have a high school credit in ASL and be able to carry on beginner or advanced signing conversations, depending on each student’s proficiency and amount of years studying ASL.
