Class Description

This course introduces high school students to the foundational principles of chemistry. Students will study the structure of matter, atomic theory, the periodic table, chemical bonding, reactions, stoichiometry, gases, solutions, and basic thermochemistry. Through clear explanations, real-world examples, and hands-on experiments, students will develop an understanding of how chemical principles govern the physical world.
The course emphasizes scientific reasoning, problem-solving, and laboratory investigation. Students will complete regular readings, practice problems, quizzes, and lab activities that reinforce key concepts. By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in chemistry that prepares them for advanced science courses in high school and beyond.
Student Learning Goals
• Apply the scientific method to investigate questions and test hypotheses
• Design and conduct simple experiments and investigations
• Record observations and organize scientific data
• Create and interpret graphs, charts, and scientific diagrams
• Communicate scientific ideas through written explanations and discussion
• Evaluate evidence and distinguish between observations, data, and conclusions
Class Structure
Students complete reading assignments, study questions, and assessments at home using the Apologia curriculum. Weekly co‑op meetings focus on hands‑on experiments, demonstrations, interactive activities, short instructional presentations, and collaborative discussion designed to connect scientific concepts to real‑world phenomena.
