Discover the beauty of shibori in this hands-on, one-day workshop exploring traditional Japanese resist dyeing.
You’ll learn how simple techniques like folding, binding, and wrapping can transform plain cloth into beautifully patterned textiles. Working with natural indigo, we’ll guide you through the full dye process—from preparation to dipping and oxidation—while creating a series of unique samples and finished pieces.
Techniques explored may include:
- Itajime (folded and clamped resist)
- Arashi (pole wrapping)
- Bound resist techniques
This workshop is designed as both a standalone experience and a foundation for further study in shibori.

Materials
Students may bring their own natural fiber cloth (cotton, linen, silk), or purchase materials through the studio.
A materials fee may apply. Details will be provided upon registration.
What to Bring
- Apron or clothes suitable for dyeing
- Closed-toe shoes
- Optional: personal fabrics to dye
Important Notes
- Indigo is a natural dye, but it can permanently stain clothing
- Some hand strength is helpful for binding techniques
- Please arrive on time, as the dye process is time-sensitive
