Class Description

This course introduces high school students to the scientific study of the universe and its celestial bodies, exploring topics such as the observable universe, our solar system, stars, galaxies, and the large-scale structure of the cosmos. Students will investigate how astronomers use observation, physics, and modern technology to understand objects far beyond our planet.
Through engaging readings, interactive activities, and observational assignments, students will develop an understanding of key astronomical concepts and scientific inquiry. The course encourages curiosity about the universe while strengthening critical thinking and observation skills, providing students with a deeper appreciation for the complexity and order of creation.
Student Learning Goals
Students will develop practical scientific skills such as:
• Applying the scientific method to astronomical investigations
• Understanding how scientists use observational evidence and modeling to study distant objects
• Interpreting astronomical images, diagrams, and observational data
• Analyzing the motion and interactions of planets, moons, and other celestial bodies
• Creating and interpreting graphs, charts, and scientific models
• Communicating scientific ideas through written explanations and discussion
• Students will learn about the work of historical and modern astronomers, whose discoveries transformed our understanding of the universe.
Class Structure
Students will complete reading assignments and comprehension questions at home using the Apologia astronomy curriculum. Weekly co-op meetings will focus on: guided discussion of key astronomical concepts, activities demonstrating orbital motion, cosmic scale, and planetary systems, demonstrations related to telescopes and astronomical observation, and occasional short videos and presentations
