Math Content Clinic: Ratios, Proportions & Proportional Reasoning, Sessions 1-4

Grade Band 6-8: Ratios, Proportions & Proportional Reasoning
Sessions 1-4 of the Ratios, Proportions & Proportional Reasoning Content Clinic is designed to broaden and deepen mathematical understanding beyond a simple introduction to these concepts. In this critical topic for students in grades 6-8, educators will strengthen their understanding of how ratios, proportions and proportional reasoning connect to each other and to other math topics. This content clinic aims to aid educators in uncovering how proportional reasoning differs from other types of reasoning, recognize important aspects of proportional reasoning, and the circumstances in which it is appropriate to reason proportionally. Participants will increase their understanding of core concepts, expand their preparation for addressing unanticipated student responses, and gain insights on how to challenge and extend their ideas. Knowing how these concepts interact with students' cognitive development, and acquiring new perspectives informed by neuroscience, will enhance participants’ approach to teaching ratios, proportions, and proportional reasoning.
