Twined Basketry: Patterned Bowls
Interested in discovering the possibilities within the world of basket weaving? Twined basketry is a great starting point. Its versatility and flexibility make it welcoming to all skill levels.
Within this class, you will learn the fundamentals of weaving a twined basket by creating a set of two bowls. Demonstrations will discuss topics such as how to start and finish a basket, how to modify the basket’s shape, as well as how to add patterned designs.
Discussions about pattern generation will include a variety of global traditions including ones that are textile and non-textile based, digital and non-digital. By the end of the class, you will be able to incorporate your own creativity to make functional pieces you can share.
While most supplies will be provided, it is encouraged for participants to bring the following items:
• Journal
• By the second class, bring additional yarn. It will need to be gauge 4, either cotton or wool
If you are interested in taking the class, but have a reoccurring hand injury, or condition such as arthritis, it is important to take breaks. The repeated small hand movements could potentially affect your condition.
Activities are made possible in part by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
We value inclusion and access for all participants. This class is wheelchair accessible and we are pleased to provide additional reasonable accommodations. Please contact Alexianna at alexi@traditionalartstoday.org to make a reasonable accommodation request. Requests must be submitted 2 weeks in advance of class.
