Fall Outing: Walk the 1675 Pine Grove (Fri #12)
This is a short walk to see an old growth white pine (Pinus strobus) forest. The trail is informal and the footing is uneven in places. The trees in the grove germinated about 350 years ago and have survived pretty much untouched. In 2006 about 50 trees within the 12-acre area were catalogued. White pines typically do not live beyond about 350 years, so this is a mature forest. While many standing trees remain, a number of the catalogued trees have toppled and rest on the forest floor as they return to the land. Among the fallen is #103, which was the tallest tree in NYS when it fell in 2022. The current forest floor supports an abundance of ferns and bryophytes.
