Fall Outing Paddle: The Seven Carries Route (Sat #4)

Sat, Sep 19, 2026, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM EDT

As a one-way point-to-point paddle, we'll need to shuttle vehicles. The historic Route of the Seven Carries was popularized in the Gilded Age connecting Paul Smiths Hotel and the Saranac Inn.

Today, the most common route involves only six carries (skipping Little Green Pond). We'll start at Little Clear Pond and paddle/carry to St. Regis Pond, Green Pond, Little Long Pond, Bear Pond, Bog Pond, and into Upper St. Regis Lake. The longest portage is a half a mile.

The remaining five portages are less than 2/10 of a mile each. Depending on the weather/wind conditions, we may paddle through Spitfire Lake and into Lower St. Regis Lake to finish at Paul Smiths College, or alternatively we could end at Upper St. Regis Landing for shorter mileage. Participants will need to carry their own canoes and equipment across the portages.
