Fall Outing Hike: Little Haystack (Sat #9)
We will meet on campus and carpool to the trailhead. Little Haystack (not the High Peaks Haystack) is a small mountain (elevation of 2880’) in the Saranac Lake area.
We will start from the Jackrabbit trailhead on McKenzie Pond Road in Saranac Lake and proceed up the Jackrabbit trail. The first 1.7 miles is a relatively flat, wide trail through the woods. Then, the trail begins to climb along an old jeep road, rising 925' in 1.4 miles. Next is a slightly steeper climb to the summit over 0.4 miles.
Although we won't get above treeline, there are good views to the east from the summit. On the way down, we’ll take a small detour to McKenzie Pond where we can swim if the water is warm enough! After our break there, we will return the last 1.8 miles to the parking area.
Meeting place: Young Life Campus lodge dining room
Travel distance: Carpool 20 miles from campus to the trailhead
Trip rating: B (Moderate)
Trip distance: 7.4 miles; 1415' elevation gain
Maximum group size: 12
