Fall Outing Paddle: Middle Saranac Lake and Weller Pond (Sat #18)
This is an out and back paddle. We will put in at the South Creek Launch. We’ll paddle down pretty South Creek to Middle Saranac and then cross Middle Saranac to the outlet of Weller Pond.
In 1931, Martha Reben stayed at Weller Pond as she recuperated from tuberculosis. She recounted her experience in The Healing Woods, a nice read. We will eat lunch at an empty campsite. If we are lucky, it may be one that Martha Reben stayed at.
We will also venture into Little Weller Pond to see its bog flora including pitcher plants, sundews and bladderworts as well as evidence of beaver activity. And there are usually loons. Middle Saranac is a beautiful lake but it can be windy for a small lake.
