Fall Outing: Birding Bloomingale Bog (Sat #26)

Sat, Sep 19, 2026, 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM EDT

Bloomingdale Bog is one of the most significant birding hotspots in Franklin County. The trail is an old railroad bed so there is negligible elevation change and the hiking is easy. Of course many of the wood warblers will have already migrated south and most that remain will be in fall plumage.

However, the bog also features boreal species and we may be lucky enough to see Black-backed woodpecker, Canada Jay, and Palm Warbler. Other birds seen from time to time include Crossbills, Boreal Chickadee, Lincoln’s Sparrow, and Rusty Blackbird. Bring your own binoculars.

The pace will be slow and we may explore the Bigelow Road which crosses the Bog trail for a distance as well. Since many of the birds will not be singing it will be important for every one to minimize conversation as we listen for bird call notes.
