This is an 8 week course aimed at total beginners, wanting to learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing, and taking clay from a raw material to a finished piece.
We’ll cover these basics:
- Understanding materials and process
- Good wedging and conditioning of the clay
- Centring the clay on the wheel
- Opening, and pulling up a cylinder
- Trimming
- Attachments and alterations
- Surface decoration
- Glazing
- Finishing the fired pieces
The main goals of this class:
- Lock in the skills needed to pull a consistent cylinder
- Make one, or more completed pots (cups and/or jugs), with attached handles, to take home
- Achieve a strong base of skills, which can be built upon achieve larger, and more complex pieces in the future
- Demonstrate safe practices for working in clay studio
- Create a fun, relaxed, and supportive learning environment, where people come away feeling better than they arrived
Things to bring to every class:
- Apron/old clothes/overalls (you will get clay on you)
- Old shoes to wear
- A small wooden board (A4-ish in size) to take your work home on
- Plastic bags (newspaper’s plastic sheaths, or bread bags are great)
- An old towel for your hands and lap
- A lidded container for collecting slops to recycle later
- A small polystyrene box (optional, but helpful)

Payments for term are to be made in full via bank deposit on registration, by registering for this class you are agreeing to pay the full term fees before the commencement of term.

Clay and glazing fees are additional to lesson fees. Allow approximately $20 - $40 over the term, depending on the quantity and size of pieces you produce. You are able to pay for these on the day of purchase at the studio, via eftpos, cash, or bank transfer.
