Beginner Wheel Throwing Pottery Sunday AM

This is an 8 week, beginners course in wheel throwing, suited to people with little to no experience.

In these 8 weeks, we’ll lay down the fundamental knowledge and skills you’ll need to work successfully on the wheel, and build on in future terms.

This term will be focused on clay prep, centering, and cylinders. Cylinders are the foundation of almost all other forms made on the wheel, thus an important first step to master, and allow you to move onto more complex forms.

We will be working to make something you can take home at the end of the term. Think a mug, a jug, or a vase, maybe one of each? We’ll go through attaching handles, altering thrown forms, surface decoration, glazing, and finishing. We’ll also cover some big picture stuff, like health and safety, and the broader culture of ceramics in Aotearoa and the world.

Please bring:
Apron/old clothes/overalls (as you will get clay on you)
Old shoes to wear
A small wooden board (A4-ish in size) to take your work home on
Plastic bags (newspaper’s plastic sheaths or bread bags are great)
An old towel for your hands and lap
A lidded container for collecting slops to recycling later

Payment

Payments for term are to be made in full via bank deposit on registration, by registering for this class you are agreeing to pay the full term fees before the commencement of term.
