Intermediate Surface Design

Ready to take your pots to the next level? This 6-week class is designed for students who want to go beyond form and dive into the world of surface decoration and design.

We’ll explore a wide range of techniques that add depth, texture, and personality to your work. This class is all about experimentation, layering, and developing your own visual style.

Techniques we’ll explore include:

  • Mishima
  • Sgraffito
  • Terra Sigillata
  • Patinas
  • Sodium Silicate textures
  • Underglazes
  • Underglaze and overglaze decals

We’ll work with a variety of materials and processes to create richly layered surfaces, and students will have access to a curated selection of rice paper decals featuring honey bees, butterflies, forest landscapes, roses, and other botanical designs.

This class is best suited for students who have taken at least 2 or more classes and are comfortable making a 4-inch cylinder, as the focus will be on surface exploration rather than beginner throwing skills.

Come ready to experiment, get a little messy, and push your creativity further than ever before.

What to bring:
A towel, and clothes you don’t mind getting messy — or an apron.

Ideal For:

  • Students with previous wheel-throwing experience (at least 2 prior courses)
  • Potters looking to explore surface design
  • Students who can throw a 4in cylinder

Includes:

  • 25 lbs of clay
  • 6 weeks Studio Access
  • Rice paperdecals
  • Over glaze decals
  • 2 weeks after class ends to finish all work
  • Weekly Open Studio time outside of class to practice and explore

Students will meet for 2.5 hrs, 7pm- 9:30pm, once a week for six weeks. You will be able to progress at your own speed and instruction will be catered to your particular skill level.

The class must have 6 people to run.

Be sure to wear old clothes or bring a apron and towel. Basic beginner pottery tools can be purchased here for $15. If you have any questions about the class, please email Delores at infodelorespottery@gmail.com

Students must be 18 years or older. Some exceptions can be made. Contact Delores with requests before registering your child.

We do not offer personal make up days since all of our classes are full.Typically instructors repeat lessons so if you miss one week you'll have the demo next time. We also offer open studio, access to the studio on the weekends and some weekday options for students to come in and practice.
