Karina's Law One Year Anniversary Celebration & Panel

Join us on Monday, May 11 from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm at The Hideout as we commemorate the first-year anniversary of Karina’s Law taking effect.

Originally known as House Bill 4144, Karina’s Law was signed on February 10, 2025 and took effect on May 11, 2025. The law honors the memory of Karina Gonzalez, whose life was taken in an act of domestic gun violence perpetrated by her husband. That same act also claimed the life of her daughter, Daniela Alvarez, and wounded her son, Manny Alvarez. Their story is a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need for stronger protections for survivors of gender-based violence.

Karina’s Law was created to meet that need. By empowering courts and law enforcement to actively remove firearms as part of orders of protection, the law provides a critical safeguard for survivors and a meaningful step toward preventing future tragedies.

Thanks to the tireless advocacy of The Network, its member organizations, and so many dedicated community members, survivors now have one more layer of safety available to them. On this anniversary, we hold Karina, Daniela, and their family in our hearts while also recognizing the collective work, courage, and persistence that made this law possible.

Doors will open at 5:30 pm for this panel event with a Q&A. Speakers will be announced soon.

Each Network partner organization is eligible for two free tickets to the event. If you would like to purchase additional tickets, please visit https://www.hideoutchicago.com/shows/the-network-may-panel-11-may.
