Program: Gone Fishing! a fishing day trip at Bendigo Park

Open to: Students entering into 5th-8th Grade

Program Description:

In the morning, John Berger, fisheries biologist for Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC), along with other WPC staff, will lead an electro-fishing demonstration to show how scientists study fish populations and habitats.

Also, members of the Jim Zwald Chapter of Trout Unlimited will introduce the parts of a fishing rod and help kids practice casting, reeling, baiting hooks, and fishing skills. We did not forget about fishing! The campers will have time to fish!

In the afternoon, the Elk and Cameron County Conservation Districts will host a session on macroinvertebrates—small creatures that help us understand stream health—and teach about stream habitat and riparian restoration efforts.

If time allows, we’ll end the day with a casual walk along the shoreline to observe different stream habitats and discuss ongoing restoration projects in the park.

*Parent Notes*

-Campers should bring a bagged lunch for the trip. They may also bring their own water bottles if they wish. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
