Introduction to Zine Making
with teaching artist Vanessa Rae Brocato
Thursday, May 21, 4-5:30pm at the South Haven Memorial Library
Adults and teens, ages 14 and up
Free program, no registration needed
Small, independently produced magazines called zines are a classic Do-It-Yourself form of information dissemination. Many early zines were fan productions investigating and celebrating their favorite sci-fi novels, comics, music, and other arts.
In this class, participants will make a small six-page zine from one piece of paper. We will fill our zine pages using drawing, writing, and collage. The subject of your zine is up to you. You can make an old school fan zine. You can document your insights on your favorite deep-dive topic (current hyper-focus), fashion inspiration, or art making process. Please feel encouraged to consider your topic in advance and bring any notes or content matter to class. We plan to copy the zines to share among all the participants in the class, and if the artists would like then we will send copies of the zines to the Zine Pavillion at the American Library Association conference being held in Chicago, June 2026.
This class is a two part series, artists are invited to join us for the second class at the South Haven Center for the Arts on Friday, May 22.
