Vasalisa the Wise: Exploring women's intuition via the arts

For girls entering 7th & 8th grade in Fall 2026

Over the course of 4 days, artist Melanie King will be creating a space for young women to gain wisdom and knowledge of their intuition from the folk story “The Doll in her Pocket: Vasalisa the Wise”, as retold in the NYT bestselling book Women Who Run With the Wolves. Integrating storytelling, discussion, journaling, printmaking, collage and bookmaking, participants will explore recognizing their intuitive power, the life/death/life cycle, and identifying support systems , and finish the week with a collection of meaningful artwork, and a book, designed to support them as they navigate their teen years and into young adulthood. The session is limited to 8 participants.

About the Instructor

Melanie is a silkscreen artist, trained anthropologist, and former UX designer. A native to California, she has also lived and worked in Honduras, Israel, China and Australia, all places where she also conducted varying arts classes for children, youth, and young adults. Melanie’s personal artistic work explores the transformative internal processes that women undertake as we navigate self-healing, national politics and pop-culture provocations. Her practice honors intuition, ancestral connection, and storytelling as forces that nourish and sustain us. Creating large-scale silkscreen prints, she draws inspiration from the bold visual language of posters from the Chicano and other 20th Century social movements, while reframing them within feminine and folkloric imagery. Her prints engage existing cultural symbols in dialogue with her unique perspectives as a bilingual mixed-race woman, artist and mother.
