Each week Queen City Comedy offers a fun, "learn through laughing" approach to building improv skills! Each Saturday, we’ll explore a key improv principle through simple games and exercises, while you build confidence and creativity. Whether you have improv experience and want to build new skills, or you are new and ready to learn — just bring yourself and a willingness to laugh and play!
Reaction to Action: How simple choices and movement can create stellar scenes. How often have you gotten the note or felt the note “You’re too in your head.” Peter’s Reaction to Action class is built to get you out of your head and into great scenes where you are present and connecting with your scene partner. Whether creating characters, finding game of scene, or building patterns reaction to action will give you some tools to give you time to think while keeping your scenes dynamic and feeling fast paced.
Different skill focus each week:
Week 1: Simple reactions. All you need is on you. Using our own reactions to help energize and build scenes.
Week 2: The power of space work. How simple movements within a scene keep them dynamic and engaging while helping guide and build a great scene.
Week 3: Silence, your best scene partner. How strategic uses of silence within in your scenes can actually fuel them and not slow them down.
Week 4: Stop solving problems, start making problems. Pulling ourselves away from the need to negotiate, bargain, or “make nice” in our scenes to keep them moving and heightening.
About your Instructor:
Peter Fluet is a recent transplant to North Carolina and the Charlotte area. He spent the prior 25 years studying, performing, coaching and teaching improv and sketch comedy in Los Angeles. He has trained/performed with The Groundlings Theater, Second City Hollywood, Second City at Sea on Norwegian Cruise Lines, IO West, Westside Comedy Theater, and UCB Hollywood. He hosted several workshops at different improv festivals throughout the country by himself and with his Los Angeles improv team Heyday. He has written several plays that originated from his improv and two of them have won awards at the Hollywood Fringe festival. He has taught beginner level improv all the way to advanced improv forms. Currently he is coaching teams at Charlotte Comedy Theater and performing with Now are the Foxes and Clutch.
