Adirondack Mountain Club

This trip demands a high level of physical fitness in order to complete it within the available daylight hours. ADK reserves the right to deny participation if group safety will be compromised through an individual's participation.

This program is a guided trip including both paddling and hiking in the St. Regis Canoe Area. The paddling portion of the day will total approximately 5 miles on Long Pond, with a mid-day trek to the summit of Long Pond Mountain, a peak only accessible by boat! The hike will total approximately 3 miles round trip with a flat approach and exit with a steep ascent of 900 ft. over one mile. Switchbacks offer relief from the steep grade throughout the hike before arriving at a small, bedrock summit with views of the St. Regis Wilderness if weather allows. In total, participants can expect to paddle around 5 miles and hike 3 miles with approximately 900 ft in elevation gain. The trip will be led by a member of ADK’s Education Department staff that is an experienced guide.

We will all meet at the Floodwood Outpost on Floodwood Road just outside of Lake Clear, NY. From there, we will caravan to the Long Pond access 1.25 miles further down Floodwood Road where we will carry our equipment and canoes approximately .25 miles to the put-in and return the same way.

Prior paddling experience is highly recommended. Good physical condition, proper clothing, and proper equipment are a must. Participants will want to be prepared with clothing, footwear, and equipment suitable for both canoeing and hiking. Canoeing-specific clothing, footwear, and equipment will be left with the canoes during the hiking portion of the day. ADK will provide canoes, PFD’s, and paddles. Please reach out to your guide in advance if you would like to use your own paddling equipment.
