Seven Carries Paddling Adventure
Health insurance is required to participate in the program.

This trip demands a high level of physical fitness in order to complete it within the available daylight hours. ADK reserves the right to deny participation if group safety will be compromised through an individual's participation.

This program is a guided paddling trip in the St. Regis Canoe Area. This historic canoe route is 8 miles in length with 7 miles of paddling and 1 mile of portaging over the course of six portages. The seventh portage that gave this route its name was once used to access Saranac Inn but is no longer a part of the modern "7-Carries" canoe route. If you are learning to portage canoes (carrying them upside down on your shoulders) as a new skill on this trip, a can-do attitude and an aptitude for hard work is a must! All participants will practice portaging canoes at the put-in. We will begin at Paul Smith's College on Lower St. Regis Lake. From the put-in, we will paddle south into Spitfire Lake, then to Upper St. Regis Lake. From here, we will portage canoes into Bog Pond, then over to Bear Pond where we will enter the St. Regis Canoe Wilderness. We will portage canoes to Little Long Pond, paddle, portage to Green Pond, paddle, portage to St. Regis Pond, paddle for a little over a mile, portage for a half-mile to Little Clear Pond, and finish the trip with a paddle to the take-out on the southern shore. The trip will be led by a member of ADK’s Education Department staff that is an experienced paddler.

Please plan on meeting at the dirt-parking lot across from the Paul Smith's College entrance on the corner of Rt. 30 and Rt. 86 by 7:30am. Please arrive packed and ready to paddle. After caravanning to the put-in, we’ll go through group introductions, a trip overview, and portaging practice before pushing off on Lower St. Regis Lake. We will be shuttled from the take-out on Little Clear Pond to our cars to conclude the trip.

Prior paddling experience is highly recommended. Good physical condition, proper clothing, and proper equipment are a must. ADK will provide canoes, PFD’s, and paddles. Please reach out to your guide in advance if you would like to use your own paddling equipment.
