Sojourner Truth School for Social Change Leadership

In exploring issues related to diversity, it's important that we understand ourselves and recognize the unique stories of people who may be different from us. One of the most important aspects of identity is a person's name and the story behind it. Pronouncing someone’s name correctly (by practicing it when necessary) is an authentic connection with both students and adults. When learning, using, and sharing the story of their name, students and teachers are afforded the opportunity to be in a learning community that is supportive of their academic achievement and success and the growth of everyone.

This interactive workshop will guide participants to explore, share and hear the stories of their names and the names of others. Participants will watch videos, reflect on prompts and interact with peers.

Participants will take with them:

•           A tool for life in the form of the Peace and Justice Institute Principles of “How We Treat Each Other” which promote a safe and inclusive community while engaging in structured conversations;

•           A fostering of inclusivity by embracing diverse perspectives;

•           A continued awareness of the importance of trust in building relationships;

•           A capacity for showing professionalism in leading by example through attention to detail in classroom interactions.
