Crafting the Scene
The scene is the basic building unit of a play. Mastery of writing the scene is fundamental to the craft of playwriting. But what constitutes a "scene"? Or, more importantly, what makes for a good scene? Is it universal or does it vary based on the style, structure, and/or intent of the play?
In this course, we will study a variety of highly effective scenes from major dramatic works, each with a different structure & action. We will turn this knowledge into practice by constructing our own scenes (which may be completely original or built to fit into a play you are developing). The class will culminate in a workshop in which each participant will share a scene and receive feedback.
This course is open to beginner and experienced playwrights. If this is your first time engaging with the craft of playwriting, a primer will be provided to get you started on the basics of formatting and other technicalities.
The course will meet in a virtual classroom via Zoom, and an online dropbox for course material will be shared via Google Drive.
