Welcome to Manual Handling Training
While most people associate manual handling with heavy boxes and dusty warehouses, the mechanics of how we move are universal. To give you the safest and most efficient techniques possible, today’s course is built on the 4 Key Principles of Lifting—strategies perfected by Olympic weightlifting teams to move massive loads without injury.
This is a hands-on, face-to-face course. We won’t just be talking about safety; we will be practicing it. By the end of this session, you will undergo a practical assessment to ensure these four pillars are part of your "muscle memory."
## The 4 Principles of the Lift
We will focus on these core concepts to protect your spine and maximize your strength
*Inside Base:** Keeping the load and your feet positioned so your centre of gravity is always stable. If the load is outside your base, you’re fighting physics; if it’s inside, you’re in control.
*Big Engines:** Shifting the work away from the small, fragile muscles of your lower back and onto your "big engines"—your glutes, quads, and hamstrings
*Turn, Not Twist:** Spinal rotation under pressure is a leading cause of injury. We will practice moving our feet to turn the whole body as one
*Dip and Drive:** Using momentum and leg power to initiate the lift, ensuring a smooth, vertical transition rather than a jerky ull.
What to Expect
1. **Demonstration:** We will walk through the mechanics of each principle.
2. **Guided Practice:** You’ll get hands-on experience with various loads.
3. **Practical Assessment:** A final check to move a load safely from point A to point B using the Olympic **Let’s take care—method.
remember, it’s not just about lifting heavy; it’s about lifting smart.
