Defensive Shotgun 102 (DS102) – Defensive Shotgun Fundamentals
Instructor: Guy Coursey
(Gunsite Instructor | NRA, SIG SAUER, Smith & Wesson, and Glock Certified)

Building on the foundation established in DS101, Defensive Shotgun 102 (DS102) is designed to take students deeper into the practical application of the defensive shotgun. This course focuses on developing efficiency, problem-solving, and adaptability under more dynamic conditions.

The defensive shotgun is an incredibly capable tool, but only when the user can run it with control, awareness, and confidence beyond the basics. DS102 is structured to bridge that gap.

Under the guidance of highly experienced instructor Guy Coursey, students will refine core skills while learning how to apply them in more realistic and demanding scenarios.

Throughout the course, students will learn and demonstrate:

  • Reinforcement and proper application of firearm safety under increased tempo
  • Multiple kneeling positions and squat-based shooting platforms, and when to apply them in a tactical environment
  • Efficient movement into and out of positions while maintaining control of the firearm
  • The purpose, application, and execution of the “select slug” technique
  • Identification of common shotgun malfunctions, their causes, and how to quickly remediate them under pressure

This course places a strong emphasis on thinking with the gun, not just running it. Students will be challenged to make decisions, manage their equipment, and maintain composure while executing practical defensive tasks.

Live-fire exercises will include:

  • Positional shooting from standing, kneeling, and squat positions
  • Transitioning between ammunition types using select slug techniques
  • Malfunction diagnosis and clearance in real time
  • Scenario-based drills designed to reinforce efficiency and decision-making

By the end of DS102, students will have a deeper understanding of how to effectively run a defensive shotgun in more complex situations, with improved confidence, control, and problem-solving ability.

This course is ideal for shooters who already understand the fundamentals and are ready to elevate their performance and capability with the defensive shotgun.
