Top-Rope Anchors and Abseiling
Top Rope Anchors and Abseiling
Top-rope climbing is a system in which a rope runs from a belayer at the bottom of a cliff, up through an anchor at the top, and back down to the climber. It’s the simplest way for beginners to experience outdoor climbing, and it needs very little equipment. If you’ve climbed at an indoor wall, you’ve probably learned the basics, like belaying and tying a figure-8, but the rope was already in place at the top. This course teaches you how to put it there.
This course is for people who want to set up their own top-ropes safely in the outdoors. It’s particularly useful if you’re planning to buy your own equipment and take friends or family out for a day on the rock.
AT A GLANCE
- Skills Requirement: None, some experience top rope climbing at a gym helps
- Duration: Two days, 9am to 4pm (12 hours of teaching)
- Guide ratio: 1:6
- Location: Falcon’s Lookout, Werribee Gorge
WHO IT'S FOR
This course suits anyone who wants to climb outdoors independently, starting with the foundations. Many people arrive having only climbed at a gym, or not at all, and that’s completely normal. Most go on to buy their own gear, so the course gives you a clear idea of what to look for.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
Anchors and safety: choosing areas that suit top-roping (and recognising those that don’t), securing yourself at the top of a cliff while you build, building ERNEST anchors that can hold a fall, and inspecting fixed hardware and anchors before you use them.
Belaying and abseiling: belaying a climber as they ascend (it’s not as simple as holding the rope), lowering them safely, and abseiling with a prusik backup.
Rope and decision-making: managing excess rope on the ground, caring for your rope, finishing the day without leaving any gear behind, spotting the most common top-rope mistakes, and making calm, considered decisions outdoors.
HOW IT RUNS
We teach the skills in the order you’ll use them on a real day out: building anchors first, then belaying and lowering, then abseiling with a prusik backup. Rope management and safety run through all of it, and we make sure you can do each step yourself before we move on.
WHAT TO BRING
All gear is included, from harnesses and helmets to climbing shoes, at no extra cost. You bring clothing and footwear for light hiking, and your own lunch and water. If you already own a harness, helmet, locking carabiners or a belay device, bring them along. Learning on your own kit is the best way to get to know it.

FAQs
- I’ve never climbed before. Is this course suitable?
Yes, though it helps to have a feel for outdoor climbing first, or at least have done some top rope climbing at a gym before. If you haven’t done any, an Adventure Tour is a good place to start. If no tour dates suit you, you can book a guide for a Private Guiding day. - Do I need to own any gear?
No. We provide everything. - Can I bring my own gear?
Yes. Let us know beforehand and we’ll teach you on your own kit.
