Safeguarding in Practice

Responding Confidently to Safeguarding Disclosures

When a child chooses to tell... your response matters. Children rarely remember every word an adult says during a safeguarding disclosure, but they often remember how that adult made them feel. A calm, empathic and professional response can help a child feel heard, believed and supported; while ensuring they receive the protection they need.

This engaging two-hour workshop equips school staff with the knowledge, confidence and skills to respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, while working within statutory guidance and school safeguarding procedures. Please note, this is not a safeguarding training course. This training compliments existing safeguarding knowledge by developing the practical skills needed to respond effectively while working within the professional boundaries of your role.

Learning Approach

Our approach is simple: teachers are not therapists or investigators, but they are often the first trusted adult a child chooses to tell. We believe every member of staff should feel confident responding with compassion and professionalism. To enable this, our highly interactive workshop includes short presentations, group discussions, interactive skills, reflection exercises and role-play activities. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

✔ feel more confident in responding calmly and appropriately to safeguarding concerns.

✔ build a safe, trusting environment that supports children during challenging conversations.

✔ recognise and respond to the impact of trauma on children's behaviour and communication,

✔ explain the limits of confidentiality honestly and appropriately to young people.

✔ use effective communication skills to navigate difficult conversations.

✔ manage emotional responses using self-regulation techniques.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is ideal for all school staff with safeguarding responsibilities including Teachers (Primary & Secondary), Teaching Assistants, SENCOs, Pastoral Teams, Learning Mentors, School Leaders, Early Career Teachers (ECTs).
