4PD hrs This session includes a 1-hour lunch break. Register with PD+ prior to session start.

Teachers will explore the impact of stress, chronic stress, and anxiety on the nervous system and how that affects the learning environment and the learning process. Teachers will develop a plan for personal and classroom mindfulness / stress-reducing strategies.

Participants will be able to support student learning through professional development in the area of Illinois Social-Emotional Learning Standards.

SEL 1A: Identify and manage one’s emotions and behaviors

SEL 1C: Demonstrate skills related to achieving personal and academic goals.

What does it take to be a Tranquil Teacher -- and Why Does that Matter?

One of the key components of a Mindful School is the mental and emotional wellbeing of the adults who work in the school. This does not mean everyone needs to be meditating daily, but it does mean that mindful practices are supported and encouraged.

In this session we will explore the purpose of mindfulness practice for teacher self-care, and its impact on students and classroom instruction. We will learn a structure for mindful routines and practical strategies for incorporating R.E.A.L. social-emotional learning throughout the school year.

This 4-hour session will cover the following topics:

> Self-Care, Mindfulness, and the Nervous System

> The Scale and Continuum of the Stress Cycle and Stress Crisis

> Applying Vagal Tone Strategies to Teacher Self-Care

> Polyvagal Energy and its Impact on Instruction and Learning

> Instructional Strategies for Tranquil Teachers
