Ikebana: The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging
Ikebana is the art of flower arranging and is one of the representative aspects of Japanese traditional culture that started with Ikenobo. Priests who made floral offerings at the Buddhist altar of the Rokkakudo Temple lived near a pond (Ike), in a small hut (bo). For this reason people began to call the priests by the name “Ikenobo.” In 1462 the name Senkei Ikenobo first appeared in historic records as “master of flower arranging.” Senno Ikenobo, who was active in the mid-16th century established the philosophy of ikebana, completing a compilation of Ikenobo teachings called “Senno Kuden”, teaching that “Not only beautiful flowers but also buds and withered flowers have life, and each has its own beauty. By arranging flowers with reverence, one refines oneself.” Our predecessors in Ikebana felt that flowers were not only beautiful, but could reflect the passing of time and the feelings in their hearts. Arranging flowers and finding beauty in flowers - these are linked to a heart that values nature and cares for other people. This is the spirit of Ikenobo Ikebana.
Bring some of nature’s beauty into your home. Create a floral arrangement with a Japanese flair reflecting the less is more motto, that can be used in future arrangements with flowers any season. Terry Herink is a Sensei with the Ikenobo School of ikebana, holding the Junkako level certification.
