High Buildings

This workshop provides an in-depth examination of the smoke control requirements contained in Ontario Building Code Subsection 3.2.6. and Supplementary Standard SB-4. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how these provisions are applied in both new construction and existing buildings, with a focus on evaluating compliance during the design, review, and inspection stages of a project.

Designed for Part 3 plans examiners, building inspectors, designers, and other construction professionals involved with high buildings, this course explores the documentation, calculations, and supporting information typically required to demonstrate compliance with smoke control requirements. Key topics include smoke control systems in new, existing, and interconnected buildings; emergency use of elevators; firefighter venting provisions; fire alarm and emergency communication systems; system integration; and testing and verification requirements.

Through practical examples and code-based discussions, participants will develop greater confidence in reviewing and assessing smoke control designs and understanding the critical role these systems play in occupant safety and firefighter operations.

Digital course materials, including course notes and a high buildings compliance matrix, will be provided to all participants.
