Flat is Boring: The Art of Sculptural Papermaking

Move beyond the smooth, flat page and discover the dimensional possibilities of handmade paper. In this intensive four-hour workshop, students will embark on a creative adventure to transform everyday recycled papers and foraged local plant fibers into highly textured, low-relief paper sculptures. Driven by curiosity and a spirit of material experimentation, you will learn an accessible, low-water papermaking method using a standard household blender. Using this method makes it easy to recreate this practice at home without a traditional vat. We will explore methods for integrating color, organic structure, and textural composition into our pieces. Students will leave with 8 to 10 unique, textured handmade papers, a practical blueprint for setting up a low-impact home papermaking workspace, and the confidence to keep pushing the boundaries of handmade paper art.

WHEN: November 7 from 2-6pm

WHERE: Verge Classroom

PRICE: $130 General / $110 Members

About the Instructor

Bev Barnett is a Citrus Heights-based fiber and mixed-media artist whose highly textured wall sculptures explore themes of joy and resilience. Her practice blends traditional papermaking with foraged plant fibers and recycled materials, specializing in an accessible, low-water sheet-forming method using everyday household tools. She has exhibited widely in the region, including the Crocker-Kingsley and Slice exhibitions, and teaches workshops that demystify papermaking, natural dying and botanical printing by pairing foundational technique with a spirit of curious, hands-on experimentation.
