Imagining Dante with Laguna College of Art Design

Presented by: Marcella Stockstill

6 Weeks I Aug. 6 - Sept. 10 I 1:00-3:00 p.m.

In his Divine Comedy, exiled Florentine poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) lamented how poetry was unable to contain the plenitude of what he envisioned; that not everything could be elucidated with language. Enter artists Gustave Doré, Botticelli, Hieronymus Bosch, William Bouguereau, Eugène Delacroix, and a host of other remarkable artists. From the earliest days of Dante’s publication, artists and illustrators have stepped in to bring the astonishing horror and translucent beauty of Dante’s visions to life. Over the course of six sessions, we’ll discover artwork inspired by the Divine Comedy, as we explore his tripartite literary masterpiece. From the nightmarish populations of the Inferno to the multiplicity of crystalline beings in Paradiso, we’ll consider the ethics and ideas symbolized by these visions, while we prepare ourselves for what the poem is really about: a love so perfect it moves the sun and stars.
