Dialogue on the Report on the State of Scholarship in the Humanities and the Humanistic Social Sciences
Published in June 2026, the Report on the State of Scholarship in the Humanities and the Humanistic Social Sciences (aka the Vanderbilt/Washington University Report) laments a "deterioration in scholarly standards" in these fields due to excessive politicization and over-reliance on relativism and postmodernism. The report has sparked discussion and debate across higher education.
In gathering for a dialogue around this timely topic, we invite members of the University of Richmond academic community to engage in thoughtful, structured discussion of topics relevant to our shared academic mission as a liberal arts university. The goal is to deepen understanding and encourage engagement across differing perspectives.
This conversation is sponsored by the Provost's Office, the Humanities Center, and the Faculty Hub. Joanna Drell (Humanities Center) and Kitty Maynard (Faculty Hub) will facilitate.
