Skill Level: Intermediate

1.5 EMDRIA Credits Requested

1.5 CEs Included (Approved by APA and NBCC)

This is a recording of a live training that is available for on-demand viewing for 90 days after registration.

Audience: Mental Health Professionals including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, Graduate Students and pre-licensed therapists who are on a track to licensure.
Prerequisite: Participants must have fully completed an EMDRIA approved EMDR Basic Training.

About This Course:

For many years, it was believed that the only way to provide EMDR Therapy was in person. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and clinicians were forced to jump into telehealth delivery with little or no training. Telehealth is here to stay, and EMDR training is often delivered virtually, but many clinicians still feel hesitant about introducing EMDR Therapy or moving into reprocessing phases without being physically present with their clients in the same room. This can be especially true when clients have complex trauma histories or acute presentations.

In this 2-hour course, EMDRIA-Approved Consultant Hilary Bornstein will address common fears about delivering EMDR via telehealth. She will explain how to create trust within the virtual space -- even when working with more complex cases. Participants will learn a creative Phase 2 intervention that uses the power of olfactory memory to strengthen clients' sense of safety.

Through lecture, case examples, and guided practicum, participants will learn telehealth-specific techniques to effectively:

  • screen clients,
  • build rapport,
  • maintain relational attunement,
  • and plan ahead for crisis management.

Hilary will also share a creative, scripted Phase 2 Preparation intervention called Scents of Safety that uses olfactory cuing to build security and maintain virtual clients’ window of tolerance, even in complex cases. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the intervention during a guided practicum.

By the completion of this training, participants will have a better understanding of how to confidently provide EMDR via telehealth and will have specific tools to utilize in telehealth sessions with their clients.

Why this Matters:

Since 2020, the field of telehealth has grown exponentially and is an increasingly popular choice among clients today. EMDR is an empirically-based therapeutic model that can be delivered either in person or virtually. It has become a gold standard trauma treatment, and is often used in the treatment of complex trauma and PTSD. By learning to provide EMDR virtually, we can increase options for safely working with clients within a variety of treatment settings and time parameters. This creates more flexibility for clinicians and exponentially expands clients' access to effective treatment. There is now sufficient evidence to suggest that teletherapy is just as effective as in-person therapy when delivered properly, and that there is no difference in EMDR treatment outcomes when fidelity to the model is maintained in telehealth sessions.

Learning Objectives:

1) Participants will be able to list three tenets of effective telehealth therapy.

2) Participants will be able to assess whether a client is appropriate for telehealth EMDR therapy.

3) Participants will be able to demonstrate the application of a Phase 2 stabilization technique via telehealth.
