Mokulito: Japanese Wood Lithography- Workshop with Charlie Ash

Mokulito: Japanese Wood Lithography

Two day weekend workshop

Mokulito is a Japanese printmaking method which takes the principles of stone lithography and applies them to a plywood block. Conceived as a way to make the highly technical lithography process less labour intensive and more accessible, Mokulito (literally meaning wood-litho) also opens up the possibilities of working with wood as part of your image making.

During this two day course with tutor Charlie Ash, you’ll be introduced to each step of the Mokulito process, including making preparatory drawings/images, preparing the plywood, drawing with litho pencils, crayons and liquid tusche inks, and adding carved details with woodcut tools. When it comes to printing the blocks, gum arabic is used to set these waxy drawing materials into the woodgrain, then the block is kept damp while oil based inks are rolled on in thin layers. The ply blocks can be printed on an etching press with a variety of papers. This oil/water resist is the main principle borrowed from stone lithography, and on wood it can produce a beautiful range of tones; combining with subtle wood grain patterns and graphic carved areas to make a very distinctive print.

Mokulito is a great process if you’re interested in lithography but would like to try a more accessible version first. If you like tonal drawing, etching, woodcut or lino, Mokulito can be a really interesting way to expand on those skills, producing lots of unexpected (usually welcome!) results as you develop prints and experiment.

Do bring an apron to protect your clothes. You will go away with some great designs and your own blocks to use again at home. All materials included.
