Mount Marcy Overnight: Roosevelt's Historic Trek

Experience history where it happened on this unique overnight adventure towards the summit of Mount Marcy. Beginning from the Upper Works Trailhead, we'll hike to a campsite for an evening of camping and storytelling. Around camp, a live Theodore Roosevelt interpreter (Joe Wiegand) will recount the remarkable events of September 1901, when Theodore Roosevelt was hiking in the Adirondacks after the shooting of William McKinley. The following morning, we'll attempt to the summit of Mount Marcy, taking in sweeping alpine views while reflecting on one of the most consequential wilderness journeys in American history.

The hike distance may vary, depending on turnaround point but may be up to 10.3 miles one way, 20.6 miles round trip, and approximately 3,800 feet of elevation gain to the summit. Mount Marcy is the tallest peak in New York State 5,344 ft. The ascent from this direction is steep, muddy, and strenuous. Dinners and breakfasts are included but participants are expected to bring their own lunch and snacks. Be prepared for tired feet!

Vice President Roosevelt was on the descent at Lake Tear of the Clouds when he received the message that McKinley had taken a turn. During the night, Roosevelt was summoned from the MacNaughton Cottage by horseback and carriage after learning McKinley's condition had worsened. By the time he reached the railroad station in North Creek, he received the news that McKinley had died, making Roosevelt the 26th President of the United States. This Midnight Ride will be reenacted on September 13, 2026.

Spots for this hike are limited to DEC regulations. If you don't make it for the hike, you can catch Teddy on the trail or at a reception at the MacNaughton Cottage, located in the Upper Works after the hike. This hike is a collaboration with the organizers of NewcombTR Committee from September 11-13. Learn more here about other events here: https://newcombny.gov/events/tr-weekend
