Implementing PAIRR in Writing-Intensive Courses Across the Curriculum

Faculty Hub - Third Floor of Boatwright Library

Join us for a workshop with Dr. Marit McArthur.

PAIRR, an award-winning and well-tested pedagogical model, aims to build critical AI literacy while simultaneously improving equity in writing support for students and preparing them for their future careers, in which AI is being rapidly integrated.

Initially developed in composition and professional writing courses at the University of California, Davis, PAIRR works exceptionally well in small courses taught by instructors with training in writing pedagogy. When implemented strategically, PAIRR can also significantly improve critical AI literacy and writing support in medium-sized and large writing-intensive courses across the curriculum, often taught by subject matter experts who may lack training in writing pedagogy.

Such writing-intensive courses across the curriculum present special challenges and opportunities for transformation because—prior to the advent of generative AI—they often lacked support for students in the writing process. Students in these courses are often undermotivated and overwhelmed by the required writing (and reading) assignments, and thus are more likely to outsource writing to AI.

The goals of the PAIRR summer workshop and consultations are to:

  1. Help faculty address the specific challenges of teaching writing-intensive courses across the curriculum in the age of AI;
  2. Maximize student learning;
  3. Improve student writing outcomes;
  4. Reduce AI plagiarism; and
  5. Build critical AI literacy for both students and faculty.

Specifically, the summer workshop would prepare faculty to:

  1. Implement the PAIRR model in any writing-intensive course across the curriculum; and
  2. Train faculty to train colleagues in implementing the PAIRR model, learning to anticipate common challenges and provide support and guidance.
