2026-2027 Chemistry #1 of 4

Divis Educational Services offers an incredibly rich journey into the fascinating world of chemistry. Throughout the year, we'll explore all major chemistry concepts, including:

-The Atomic Theory
-Trends of the Periodic Table of Elements
-Quantum Mechanics (Electron Arrangement)
-Ion Formation
-Compound Formation - Bonding
-Avogadro's Number and the Mole
-Calculation of Formula Weights and Percent Composition
-Empirical Formulas
-Writing and Classifying Chemical Reactions
-Balancing Chemical Equations
-Stoichiometry (predicting quantitative outcomes of reactions and predicting necessary amounts of reactants to produce a desired amount of product)
-Solutions and Molarity and application to stoichiometry
-The Ideal Gas Laws
-The Role of Ethics in Science

This course is a complete high school-level chemistry course which uses simple language and a multitude of analogies to make learning chemistry easy! The abstract concepts of chemistry truly become accessible, as the learning approach will be very hands-on and inquiry-based. We'll utilize various labs, such as models, demonstrations, simulations, games, and longer-term experiments, to foster scientific thinking and process skills. The text Friendly Chemistry will be our spine, and participants will build a "field guide" of work and reflections through the year and ultimately design an investigation of a meaningful original experimental question as a culminating project.

As this course is suitable for high school chemistry + labs credit, it is not recommended for those who do not have at least pre-algebra level math skills and are not able to read and write independently. Please seek input from the director with questions about whether this class would be a good fit for your child's needs and abilities.

Also, please note that this segment is part #1 of four segments, making a yearlong class running from September 2026 through May 2027. You are making a commitment to a YEAR-LONG program. Participants must re-enroll for each segment prior to the start of each.

Participants, please bring a sack lunch and drink, and wear good walking shoes, as we often eat lunch and/or complete activities in nearby parks.
