Scratchboard Art
Scratchboard art, also known as scraperboard or scratch art, is a subtractive drawing technique in which an artist uses sharp, abrasive tools to scratch away a thin layer of dark ink to reveal a lighter layer.
In this class students will make their own scratch-board by using crayons to create a color base on mixed media paper. Next a mixture of acrylic paint and dish soap will be painted over the crayon design. Texture tools such as X-Acto knives, fine needles, or even household items like skewers or toothpicks are used to make controlled scratches. The width of the scratches reveals more or less color of the base. More removal creates colorful areas, while less removal leaves less color visible.
