Discover the elegance and precision of Kumiko, a traditional Japanese woodworking art that transforms delicate wooden pieces into striking geometric designs—without the use of nails. In this immersive two-day class, students will create a kaku-asanoha (square help leaf) design trivet, a beautiful pattern symbolizing vitality, good health, and the strength to overcome adversity.

Through hands-on instruction, students will learn how to prepare thin wooden strips, build a precise square grid, and carefully carve infill pieces to complete a decorative panel. The class will also cover how to create a mitered frame, turning the finished panel into a functional and eye-catching trivet to take home. 

Student Skill Level : Intermediate

Some prior woodworking experience is needed.  You must be comfortable using table saw, miter saw, and hand tools (chisels and hand saws).

Tools and Materials that students need to bring with them to class:

Sharp chisels (paring preferred), ¾” or 1” wide, thin blade hand saw (flush cut or dozuki saw).

Small block plane (optional)

Tuition include $30 materials.
