Texas School Safety Certification Course

School Guardian Program Training

The Texas School Safety Certification Course is an advanced two-day training program for eligible Texas school personnel who may serve in an authorized School Guardian Program. The course prepares participants with the knowledge, judgment, and handgun skills necessary to help protect students and respond effectively during a violent critical incident.

The course combines classroom instruction, practical exercises, and live-fire training. This is not a basic handgun course. Participants must arrive with safe gun-handling skills and a solid foundation in handgun marksmanship.

Course Objectives

The course focuses on the following required training objectives:

• Protection of students
• Interaction of license holders with first responders
• Tactics for denying an intruder entry into a classroom or school facility
• Methods for increasing a license holder’s accuracy with a handgun while under duress

Eligibility

This course is intended for eligible personnel of a Texas school district or open-enrollment charter school, including individuals preparing to serve in an authorized School Guardian Program.

Eligible individuals may complete the training without first being authorized by their school district to carry on campus. However, completion of this course does not, by itself, authorize an individual to carry a handgun on school premises. Authorization to carry is determined separately by the school or district in accordance with applicable Texas law and local policy.

Prerequisites & Initial Qualification Requirements

Participants must hold a valid, current Texas License to Carry (LTC) before attending this course.

At the beginning of the course, each participant will be required to:

• Pass a written examination with a score of 90% or better
• Pass the Texas LTC Handgun Proficiency Course of Fire with a score of 90% or better

Both requirements must be successfully completed with a minimum score of 90% to continue in the School Safety Certification Course.

Participants should arrive fully prepared to demonstrate safe firearm handling and above-average handgun proficiency. This is an advanced certification course and is not intended to teach basic handgun skills or prepare an unqualified shooter for the initial proficiency requirement. Participants who need additional handgun instruction or practice should complete that training before attending.

Certification

Participants must successfully complete all required classroom instruction, practical exercises, live-fire training, examinations, and proficiency requirements to qualify for the applicable Texas DPS School Safety proof of training documentation.
