Specialized Math Instruction 12 Hour VIRTUAL Workshop

Specialized Math Instruction is open to all math teachers, interventionists, coaches, and special educators.

Part I: Introduction

The first workshop in this two-part series examines the developmental process of learning mathematics and the evidence-based techniques that support all students, including those with learning difficulties or disabilities. Teachers leave with specialized instruction techniques that highlight the High Leverage Concepts (HLCs) and the HLC Progressions.

Participants will:

  • Consider critical models and strategies for teaching the High Leverage Concepts at students' instructional level.
  • Plan an intervention cycle grounded in high leverage models and critical strategies.
  • Explore lesson structures, instructional techniques, activities, and games that move students along a developmental progression and toward their goal.

Part II: Models and Critical Strategies

The second workshop deepens the work with a focus on writing goals, leveraging data, and using student work to inform next steps. Educators plan an intervention cycle built around a strength-based goal and grounded in high leverage models and critical strategies, and they learn how mathematical interviews and student work sorts reveal student understanding.

Participants will:

  • Analyze student thinking in order to write goals
  • Identify the key aspects of actionable, meaningful, strength-based goals for all layers of instruction and support
  • Analyze formative assessment data to determine what students can do and identify next instructional steps
