Additive Reasoning Day 1 VIRTUAL Workshop
Additive reasoning enables students to progress from basic counting to decomposing numbers, analyzing numerical relationships, and combining and separating quantities. These skills are foundational for the more advanced reasoning that follows.
This workshop is part of our math content series, which builds strong pedagogical skills while deepening content knowledge, using the High Leverage Concepts maps and progressions as a guide. Educators learn high-impact teaching strategies that develop conceptual understanding within additive reasoning. Participants are not required to attend all three days, but attending the full series is strongly encouraged.
Part 1: Foundations of Additive Reasoning — Number Sense and Place Value
Participants will:
- Build understanding of the foundations of addition and subtraction: subitizing, counting, hierarchical inclusion, and part-part-total understanding
- Investigate quantitative relationships and comparison through the lens of additive reasoning and place value
- Examine how base ten understanding lays the foundation for algorithmic understanding
- Engage with critical strategies and models (ten frames, number lines, place value materials) that support students’ conceptual understanding of place value and number sense as a foundation for additive reasoning
- Participate in and plan for place value opportunities throughout a structured math block
- Engage in problem-solving tasks through play, routines, and familiar contexts
