Additive Reasoning Day 2 VIRTUAL Workshop

Additive reasoning enables students to progress from basic counting to decomposing numbers, analyzing numerical relationships, and combining and separating quantities. These skills are foundational for the more advanced reasoning that follows.

This workshop is part of our math content series, which builds strong pedagogical skills while deepening content knowledge, using the High Leverage Concepts maps and progressions as a guide. Educators learn high-impact teaching strategies that develop conceptual understanding within additive reasoning. Participants are not required to attend all three days, but attending the full series is strongly encouraged.

Part 2: Building Conceptual Understanding from Basic Math Facts to Fact Fluency

Participants will:

  • Investigate and analyze quantitative relationships through the lens of additive reasoning and the relationship between addition and subtraction
  • Understand the progression of fluency and its components from basic fact fluency, computational fluency to procedural fluency
  • Explore and connect models for place value and representing additive reasoning such as ten-frames, number lines, and place value materials
  • Connect critical strategies for addition and subtraction such as composition, decomposition, and recomposition
  • Study compensation through the commutative, identity, and associative properties
  • Explore the progression of additive reasoning through concepts, properties, and models extending from whole numbers to fractions, decimals, and integers
  • Participate in and plan for additive reasoning opportunities throughout a structured math block
  • Engage with a variety of problem situations across a range of numbers
