Providing fully accessible video and audio content ensures that all students have the best opportunity to engage with course materials and succeed. You have students who need accessible multimedia content right now; they may not yet have a diagnosed disability or they may choose not to disclose it. Other students may experience temporary disabilities or access barriers, such as learning in a noisy environment, viewing videos in a quiet public space, or relying on mobile devices with limited audio.

In this workshop, you will learn how to create and remediate accessible video and audio content using commonly available tools and best practices.

All digital content, including Blackboard courses, webpages, publisher content, videos, and audio recordings provided to students, must meet accessibility standards to support student success and comply with the updated ADA Title II requirements.

Workshop learning objectives:

• Explain why captions, transcripts, and audio accessibility are essential for all learners.
• Distinguish between captions, subtitles, and transcripts and identify when each should be used.
• Identify the characteristics of accessible video and audio content.
• Evaluate the accuracy and quality of automatically generated captions.
• Edit and improve captions for clarity, punctuation, speaker identification, and synchronization.
• Create or obtain transcripts for audio-only and video content.
• Apply accessibility best practices when creating instructional videos, including clear narration, visual descriptions, readable on-screen text, and sufficient color contrast.
• Determine when existing multimedia should be remediated versus recreated for accessibility.
• Locate accessibility resources and tools available through Blackboard and other commonly used platforms.

Attendees should bring at least one instructional video or audio file to remediate for accessibility during the session. Participants should also ensure they have access to the software or platform used to create or host their media (such as Blackboard, Kaltura, Zoom recordings, YouTube Studio, or another supported platform) prior to the workshop.

The principles of captioning, transcription, audio description, and accessible multimedia design can be applied across a wide variety of software applications and platforms. For the purposes of this workshop, we will focus on the accessibility features available in Blackboard and the multimedia tools most commonly used to create and deliver online course content. Application of the knowledge gained in this workshop will help you ensure that your courses meet Standards 8 and 9 for our UA Little Rock Online Quality Assurance Standards.

This workshop is the fifth of the five Quality Assurance workshops. These workshops may be completed in any order, and participants who attend all five will receive a certificate. Attendees who participate in the live session and complete all activities will receive 10 ATLE points.
