An intentionally designed classroom environment supports the inclusion of all students. When educators create spaces that offer freedom of choice and honor student voice, every learner can engage more fully in mathematics.

Ask yourself: Can students access math tools, manipulatives, and materials independently? Is there a collaborative process for organizing and returning materials? Does the space invite collaboration? What's on the walls, and does it reflect student thinking? Are learners' preferences honored and respected? Ultimately, is the environment free of barriers to access?

The learning environment sends a powerful message about what educators believe students are capable of. An open, accessible classroom tells students that their creativity and problem-solving are valued and welcome.
