Multiplicative & Fractional Reasoning Games
Games are a powerful tool in the math classroom. They give students the time and space to practice and internalize math in a relaxed, low-stakes environment, while simultaneously offering educators valuable insights into their students' mathematical understanding.
This hour long session focuses specifically on multiplicative reasoning and fractions math games. Together, we will explore why games deserve a central place in math learning, examine a selection of multiplicative reasoning and fractions games and how they connect to specific High Leverage Concepts (HLCs), review extensions and variations that give each game a long instructional shelf life, and close with time for questions.
Participants will also receive sample games from the ALO Math Menu library!
Workshop Objectives:
- Understand the pedagogical rationale for using games as a tool for practice, exploration, and formative assessment
- Explore multiplicative reasoning and fractions games and their connections to High Leverage Concepts (HLCs)
- Learn strategies to extend and modify games to maximize their instructional value over time
Intended Audience: K-8 math educators, coaches, and building leaders who want to make math practice more engaging and insight-driven
