Multiplicative & Fractional Reasoning Games

Games are a powerful tool in the math classroom. They give students the time and space to practice and internalize math in a relaxed, low-stakes environment, while simultaneously offering educators valuable insights into their students' mathematical understanding.

This 30-minute session focuses specifically on multiplicative reasoning and fractions math games. Together, we will explore why games deserve a central place in math learning, examine a selection of multiplicative reasoning and fractions games and how they connect to specific High Leverage Concepts (HLCs), review extensions and variations that give each game a long instructional shelf life, and close with time for questions.

Participants will also receive sample games from the ALO Math Menu library!

Workshop Objectives:

  • Understand the pedagogical rationale for using games as a tool for practice, exploration, and formative assessment
  • Explore multiplicative reasoning and fractions games and their connections to High Leverage Concepts (HLCs)
  • Learn strategies to extend and modify games to maximize their instructional value over time

Intended Audience: K-8 math educators, coaches, and building leaders who want to make math practice more engaging and insight-driven
